As the fourth Principal of Ho Fung College, I would like to write a few words to express my impression and expectation on the school. Even though I just officially took up the Principalship of Ho Fung College on 1st September 2012, I do know the school well. As a teacher and principal of sister schools in the past, I know that Ho Fung students are good in not only academic area but also sports, leadership and organizing activities. As a parent of a graduate of Ho Fung College, I highly appreciate the school’s great effort and commitment to provide all-round education to students. Apart from striking for advancement in academic achievement, the school also nurtures students with good and proper attitude and values. The formal and informal curricula on language, mathematics, science, humanity, aesthetics and physical development have developed students’ multiple intelligence and aptitude for life-long learning. The school offers countless opportunities for students to take part in all sorts of co-curricular activities and community service to broaden their exposure and insight. A student told me that Ho Fung students have 3 A’s （三得） - Able to learn, Able to do and Able to engage （讀得、做得、玩得）. This is well known to teachers, parents and outsiders. I totally agree that Ho Fung students are all elite in various aspects.
Nowadays, Ho Fung College is a school of very good reputation in Hong Kong. The achievements of the school do not come easy. The drive for excellence permeates deeply the school culture. As a new principal to the school, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the entire staff for your professionalism and commitment in building a solid foundation of the school, thank the parents for your support of the school and thank students for your diligent work and engagement in the school.
Being a principal, I have a strong belief to promote harmony, dedication and a win-win scenario for everyone in school. Harmony can be interpreted as ‘team cohesion’. As long as we have a dedicated team aiming for the same goals, anything can be achieved.
Teaching and learning are the core activities of a school. We should make good use of every minute of invaluable instruction time on enhancing students’ learning. I always support teachers on their professional development and teaching. Great teachers are the most important ingredient to the success of our school. I do believe that schooling is for students. If we have great teachers in our classrooms, then we do not have to worry as much about the students. I always set students’ benefit to be the first priority. The school will focus on promoting a high level of learning culture. Resources will be allocated to furnishing an inviting place and environment for learning. School policies will be refined to streamline the academic and co-curricular activities. You may expect changes in the future which I believe to be the sources of momentum for improvement.
I also believe on life-long learning. At Ho Lap College, I learnt to be a teacher, an administrator and a vice-principal from other experienced teachers. I always reflected on my teaching for advancement of student academic achievement. When I assumed the role as the Principal of Ho Dao College, I also learnt from the colleagues in school planning, staff management and conflict resolution. After joining Ho Fung, there are also many things for me to learn and I am always willing to share with every stakeholder of my experience. With a great team of teaching staff and excellent students, I expect a continuous and sustainable advancement in learning and teaching in Ho Fung.
In my career of more than one-quarter of century, even though I have changed my job twice only, I do believe that I have the talent of coping with new challenges, new environment, new students, new colleagues and new parents well. I really like the school culture of Ho Fung on all-round development of students and her emphasis on student learning processes. My expectation is high on the quality of our teachers in classroom teaching and facilitating students’ development in multiple intelligence outside classroom. So, don’t be surprised when I walk in the classroom to have lesson observation, or join after school programmes, such as basketball training. It is my responsibility to continue the excellent culture of Ho Hung and maintain sustainable advancement in the future. From now on, the spirit of Ho Fung is deeply rooted in my mind – “Once in Ho Fung, be with Ho Fung forever”.
